Our past activities are workshops to acquire knowledge in clinical (especially surgical) anatomy
and skill in its use as a tool for surgical procedures

All workshops have two main parts

XIIIth ADVANCED LAPAROSCOPIC WORKSHOP ON FEMALE PELVIC SURGICAL ANATOMY ON UNENBALMED CADAVERS

Barcelona, Spain, 20th – 21st March 2019

ORGANIZERS

Hospital Clínic de Barcelona
Consorci Sanitari Integral Sede: Hospital General de l’Hospitalet
Departament d’Anatomia, Facultat de Medicina, Universitat de Barcelona

WHAT IS THE CORE OF THE COURSES?

The essence of the workshop is SURGICAL ANATOMY.  Not anatomy, nor surgical technics. But what surgical anatomy is? The technics that give us the opportunity to turn a map (anatomy) on to a road book and therefore allow us to answer, at all times, the three main questions related to safety during a surgical procedure:

  • What is that?
  • Where is it?
  • Which way?

HOW ARE WE DOING IT?

Ascending three steps:

  1. Review of pelvic anatomy: theoretical lecture, with three main items supporting the lecture:
    • Schemes
    • Atlas imaging
    • Video sequences of dissections or real surgery
  2. Learning and understanding what is surgical anatomy, and thus constructing our road book through female pelvis: theoretical lecture
  3. Doing it in the dissection room: practical session hands on in unembalmed female cadavers, with just two attendants for each corpse.
  4. As an additional help, there will be previously dissected fresh pieces to consult at any moment during practice under tutor’s supervision

  • Posterior pelvic spaces and fossae (the following structures must be identified: sacral promontory area including aortic and cava bifurcation; hypogastric nerve and plexus; great pelvic vessels; sciatic nerve and its origin; sciatic spine identification; recto-vaginal septum)
  • Parametrium area (the following structures must be identified: Terminal branches of the hypogastric artery as the uterine artery, vesical artery and umbilical artery)
  • External iliac vessels (extern iliac artery and vein, branches in the surgical field including corona mortis and deep circumflex iliac artery, if presents) and genitocrural nerve
  • Paraaortic space (the following structures must be identified: Aorta artery and cava vein and its branches until renal vessels, paying special attention to identify ovarian vessels)

In all the previous areas the ureter must be always localized and «under control»

Saturday 21st March 2019

Schedule:

08:15 – 08:30 Welcome and introduction

Hands-on will start with abdominal access identifying the following structures:

  • Anterior pelvic spaces and fossae (the following structures must be identified: Retzius space with endopelvic fascia and arcus tendineum, levator ani and internal obturator muscles, obturator fossa with vessels and nerves and all paravesical space).
  • Pelvic fascia and elevator insertions, cephalic side of the obturator space, the sciatic spine, the retropubic-prevesical (Retzius) space, pubic symphysis and Cooper’s ligament.
